Lake St. Clair Fishing Report

In general things seem to be running about two weeks ahead of schedule around here. With great weather lately, light winds and warm air temperatures, the smallmouth bass fishing on Lake St. Clair has been off the charts! Many fish have entered the post spawn phase, noted by sunken bellies on the large fish we have caught lately. Our catch rate has at least doubled since mid-May, mainly because of the clear water. It will not be long until the Mayfly hatch is in full swing-actually had one hitchhiking on the boat on May 27th! Almost topwater time…

Canadian waters of Lake St. Clair open to bass fishing June 26th this year. Don’t forget to get your Canadian Fishing License ahead of time by calling Lakeside Fishing Shop (586) 777-7003. Edgewater Baits (behind Peche Island) no longer carries Licenses.

On the walleye front, the hot bite on the Detroit River is definitely over, although you can scrape up a limit most nights if you dig hand lining. The St. Clair River is still producing some nice limits of ‘eyes either jigging early or hand lining at night. Remember that you get a bonus fish on the St. Clair River-6 walleye with a 13” minimum size…

Tomorrow is the musky opener (yeah baby!) A legal musky is 42” again this year (in Michigan waters), although I think it should be 72” so no one could ever keep one. For those interested in a replica mount of their first musky or largest musky, I highly recommend Fittante Taxidermy in Antigo, WI. Joe is the man. www.fittantereplicas.com

Another thank you is in order to my fine clients over the past couple of weeks. It is only because of you that I am able to make a living doing what I love. I’ll see you with the net…

Tip of the Month

Spinning Reel Line Management

It used to amaze me the speed at which some anglers could completely destroy a new spool of line on a spinning reel-twisted to heck with the inevitable deep loop(s) sticking out, slack line wrapping around the rod tip 4-7 times-just poor line management. After changing line on several rods for something like 6 nights in a row, I had a heart to heart with one of the best to ever hold a spinning rod-fellow guide Art Ferguson. We put a few ideas into practice, almost immediately eliminating all line issues.

Most anglers don’t realize that when you close the bail with the reel handle, a half twist is put in the line. Add a little slack and use the reel handle and we are talking a couple twists. Repeat a hundred times and your line is shot. Follow these three steps and your line will last for a month:

1. When putting line on a spinning reel, lay the filler spool flat, and make sure the line is coming off the filler spool counter-clockwise, and going onto your reel counter-clockwise.

2. After making a cast, stop the bait just before it hits the water with your index finger. This will keep your line tight.

3. Use your other hand to manually close the bail. (Don’t ever use the reel handle)

That’s it, eight hours later you will have perfect line. For additional line management tips, keep an eye out for my upcoming article in Michigan Outdoor News.
