Lake St. Clair Smallmouth Bass Fishing Report
I can’t believe it is the end of August already! The action for smallmouth lately is mainly in the current of both the Detroit and St. Clair Rivers with a lot of nice nice fish mixed in. The smallmouth bass fishing has been off the last week on the main body of Lake St. Clair, as far as the schools of big fish go anyway. The fish on the main lake are in a post summer transition period, but as they settle down into their early fall areas the main lake fishing will fire up again soon!
The number one bait for us lately in current has been a Provider Tackle tube in the ‘work of Art’ color, matched with a 3/8oz. Provider Tackle tube head. My good friend and fellow guide Art Ferguson turned me onto this color this summer, and it has been extremely productive. I ordered 250 tubes in this color 6 weeks ago, and I am almost out. Next time I’m ordering 1000-it’s that good.
St. Clair River Musky Fishing Report
Late August and September are my favorite times to fish the St. Clair River for musky. We have already hooked (and unfortunately lost) two giant fish in the 49-51 inch range over the last couple trips. I found a couple new musky locations accidentally by drifting tubes for bass lately, and I can’t wait to add them to the route!
Things are lining up for a strong fall bite on the St. Clair River for musky. The average fish seems healthy and larger than their Detroit River cousins so far this year, and I’m basically fired up. Hope to get you out for one of these big girls this fall!
Tip of the Month
Drop shot leader length
For several years now, I have always put about 10-14 inches between the weight and hook on my drop shot rods. Lately though, I have been using about 18”, and have even caught them on a leader as long as 3 feet. As good client/friend Mitch Stapley showed me last week, an open mind can really pay off when the fishing is tough. Keep an eye on your graph, and when a lot of fish are suspended, try a little longer leader and shorten up your cast. A short cast will keep your line angle down, keeping the bait higher off the bottom, right in front of those suspended fish!
