Lake St. Clair Smallmouth Bass Fishing Report
The first week of September on Lake St. Clair greeted us with heavy 40+ mph winds for 3-4 days, and the water temperature dropped about 10 degrees in one week-fall is here. Needless to say, things got pretty good and stained up, but they have since settled down and the smallies are making a strong move shallow. Moving baits like rattle traps and crankbaits are catching them pretty good right now on certain shallow breaks and areas.
St. Clair River Musky Fishing Report
The St. Clair River and its channels are looking great! We have been out for musky three out of the last four days, and have landed at least one fish on each trip including a 46” caught by client William Erb and a 49” caught by client Vince Blumberg. Vince’s fish completely cleared the water ‘tarpon style’ making this the most spectacular jump of the entire year! Somehow the fish stayed hooked. Too cool. We have had some nice follows on jerkbaits, but the bigger fish have come jigging the Bondy Bait.
On the St. Clair River the water temperature is right, the grass is still green and the days are getting shorter. I am booked almost every day over the next two weeks for musky, and I am really excited about how things are lining up!
Tip of the Month
Flip your line
This month’s tip deals with braided line, specifically on musky reels which by this point in the season are probably showing pretty decent wear. Today’s standard 80 or 100 pound test braided musky lines will fade in color and just look a little worn with enough use. The line is actually still strong at this point, but it shows up in the water more visibly, and it does not cast as well. Before you strip your old line off and replace it with a costly new spool, flip your line over for the rest of the season. To do this is simple. Tie your line end to something outside, hit the free spool button and then walk around the yard until your backing knot comes out of the guides. Cut your line there, then walk over to where you started, tie a double uni splice, and reel the line back in. Now the bottom of your old spool is on the top and just like that, new line…
