Lake St. Clair Smallmouth Bass Fishing Report
The smallmouth fishing on Lake St. Clair over the past couple weeks was good in small areas of clear water. There are a lot of fish that have moved shallow, and shallow cranks, traps and jerkbaits are the mainstay in the arsenal right now. The trick this time of year to catching a bunch of fish is picking an area that is fishable under the typical windy conditions we have in the fall, and then finding clear water in those areas. Most of the smallmouth are thick right now-really beginning to feed up for fall.
St. Clair River Musky Fishing Report
We have had the good fortune to catch musky on every trip over the last two weeks, with several multiple fish days. The largest fish we landed in September was a thick 49 incher (caught by client Vince Limbaugh). The average fish are running a lot larger than their Detroit River cousins so far, and most of the fish are thick from eating walleye, which I believe is their main forage this time of year in the river.
Fortunately the St. Clair River and channels have stayed clear even with all of the wind hammering down on Lake Huron (feeding the river). Only one day did we have stained patches flowing down the river, but we were able to change a few things up and catch two nice fish.
Client Tim Kight set a ‘boat record’ with the fastest musky ever caught! On an afternoon trip on Thursday, September 23rd, we arrived at our first spot. Vertically jigging a Bondy Bait, Tim hit the free spool button, contacted bottom, jigged the bait three times, and on the fourth drop he hooked and landed a beautiful 44 incher. We timed a drop and four jigging motions several times in the same depth of water, and agreed that it took him 21 seconds to hook the first musky of the day. That one is going to be tough to beat…
If you enjoy casting and jigging for musky, right now is about your best chance for a real beast. The musky fishing stays strong though October, and I hope to get you out on the water!
