Air Temp:                               am – 40s, pm – 50s

Water Clarity:                        Lake St. Clair – really stained with pockets of clear water

                                                St. Clair River – good

Important Stuff

Heading South:                    The last trip of the year for my Michigan season is November 5th this year.  That means my dog ‘Gypsy’ and I will b

e scouting on Lake Okeechobee on November 8th.  Can’t wait to get out on the Big O and see what the grass did this summer!

Quick Tip:                              Don’t be afraid to wear your Halloween costume while fishing, what a great way to stay incognito on your best spots-can’t believe I didn’t think of this one years ago.

Lake St. Clair Smallmouth Bass Fishing Report

The smallmouth bass fishing on Lake St. Clair was on fire in early October!  Almost every smallie caught during this time frame was a stout fish.  The key was finding schools of bait on the mid depth flats.  We had several 23-24 pound (best 5) fish days, and it took almost 30 pounds to win a local team tournament in early October.  A week later an Indian summer stretch with air in the 70s and several days of no wind killed the deeper power bait pattern.  During these conditions, our best action was shallow-really shallow as in 3-4 feet-using tubes and a light drop shot.  It was pretty cool scooting around shallow rock strips and sand patches between grass seeing cruising fish and the occasional mother load chasing a hooked fish back to the boat!

As the water temperature continues to drop through late October and Early November, don’t forget to add a blade bait (like a Silver Buddy) to the arsenal.  We have already caught a few on the buddy, but it is getting close to the time when a blade will out fish everything else 6 to 1.  Try a 7 ½ foot rod with braid and you will hook a lot more fish on the buddy, a lot more…

St. Clair River Musky Fishing Report

If you enjoy casting and jigging for musky, right now is about your best chance for a real beast.  All of the musky we have caught lately on the St. Clair River are heavy thick fish mainly feeding on walleye right now.  Check out the ‘fall musky-2010” photo album on my face book page (still working on adding photos to the website).

It is a really bad time of year to be a walleye; stacking up in certain locations means they are likely going to get eaten either by the locals or the local musky.

Jigging is productive through late fall, but casting jerkbaits and bulldawgs really come into play right now.  A black Bobby Bait has been my favorite late fall bait for years.  Don’t jerk too hard in the cool water and make sure you use a lot of long pauses.

After living in Fair Haven (at the North end of Anchor Bay) for two seasons now, I am still blown away by the St. Clair River and its channels.  It is amazing what you learn in a season…
