About the fishing!

The spring walleye run on the Detroit River can be awesome! Lake Erie's Western basin is the playground for millions of walleye, many of which spawn in the Detroit River in spring. During most years, the walleye begin their movement by late March. From this point through most of April, female walleye up to 10 pounds are present in good numbers. Of course, there are smaller males mixed in, but a nice size average occurs during this period.

As May rolls around, many of the larger females have gone back to the lake for the summer leaving the smaller males behind. The fish will often average 1 1/2 to 4 pounds at this time of year. I call these perfect "eater sized" males, as they are, without a doubt, the tastiest size to fry!

The method that I prefer to fish with throughout this period is known as "slipping". Slipping involves using the trolling motor to make sure that the boat is moving the same speed on top of the river as your jig is at the bottom. As the boat "slips" downstream, we vertically jig jig-'n-minnow combos over gravel beds and rocky areas.

I fish various spots in the Trenton Channel, Wyandotte, Ambassador Bridge and Peach Island areas of the river depending upon water clarity and timing. Much of the fishing occurs in US (Michigan) waters, but it is sometimes necessary to get a Canadian License. A Canadian license can be purchased in advance (see the What to Bring page of this site). If you are coming in from out of town or do not have access to an advanced license, arrangements can be made to pick up a Canadian License by boat on the morning of our trip.
My walleye season usually fills quickly so it is not a bad idea to book your date early (mid-winter).

Looking forward to taking you out on the pond!
